  7. WHAT IS THIS?
  8.  
  9. This is the eighth set of my NewIcon images for your Workbench. These all use
  10. the standard NewIcon palette, so they won't allocate any extra pens from your
  11. Workbench if you are already using NewIcons.  The entire AESicons series is
  12. well over 700 icons!!!
  13.  
  14. IMPORTANT!  If you are not running NewIcons, these will only look like little
  15. squares and you won't see any cool icons.  Read the documentation to find out
  16. how to install them.

  19. WHAT'S NEW IN THIS VERSION?
  20.  
  21. Included are over170 (!) images not found in the original NewIcons archive,
  22. NewIconsXtra set, or my  previous 7 AESicons archives.  Most are totally
  23. original, and a few are adapted from parts of Roger McVey's work and other
  24. aspiring artists.

  26. The emphasis of this archive is on ToolManager Docks.  If you didn't know
  27. already, NewIcons works with Toolmanager, so you can have those nifty looking
  28. NewIcon images as DockIcons.  I've used the standard 36 x 40 size for the
  29. DockIcons, so you can use them as regular icons if you like also. :)

  31. There are also plenty of non-dock icons in this package as well, including
  32. icons for all your favorite browsers, some great games (like WORMS!) and much,
  33. much more.

  35. With each archive, I get more and more requests for icons.  I have tried my
  36. best to fulfill all the requests so far, although there may be a few I haven't
  37. done yet.  The archive was just getting too large and I had to get a release
  38. out there to the masses.  If you don't see an icon you asked for, let me
  39. know.

  41. The next archive will contain those image folders everyone is asking for. I
  42. promise!

  47. HOW DO I INSTALL THESE TINY LITTLE SQUARES?
  48.  
  49. If you plan to use these images, you need the NewIcons Package.  It's
  50. available on Aminet (pub/aminet/util/wb/NewIconsV2.lha).  If you are not running
  51. NewIcons, you will only see little squares for the icons, and this package
  52. will be of no use for you.  To install these images, use the "copynewicon"
  53. utility to transfer the images over to the appropriate icon.  DON'T use the
  54. "creatdefaulticon" utility.  That's for creating NewIcon images for files that
  55. don't have ".info" files attached to them. Copynewicon is safe to use on your
  56. existing icons, because it won't mess with your default tool or your
  57. tooltypes.  Also, DON'T just copy the .info file over to your existing
  58. programs, because you won't keep your default tool or tooltypes that way
  59. either.  Like the NewIcons documentation says, think of this collection as a
  60. catalog of "images" rather than icons, from which you copy the image over to
  61. your other programs, rather than replacing the whole icon itself.

  64. NEWICONS UPDATE

  66. NewIcons Version 3 is well on its way, and should be out sometime this summer.
  67. There are LOTS of enhancements to the existing binaries, including a brand new
  68. Deficons brainfile that recognizes many more filetypes, and the NewIcons
  69. system has been greatly enhanced, with commodity support as well as an RTG
  70. mode that won't chew up all your chip mem if you have a GFX board.  There are
  71. many more nice surprises to come with the upgrade.  I've been testing the
  72. latest version with my CV64, and it works flawlessly at the moment.  Watch
  73. this space for more info in the coming months!

  76. HEY SOFTWARE AUTHORS!
  77.  
  78. For you software authors out there, how about putting some NewIcon images in
  79. with your programs?  For those not using NewIcons, they don't see them anyway,
  80. and it saves me the trouble of having to deal with deleting those purple MWB
  81. icons and me having to make new images for your software. You can easily make
  82. them from DPaint IFF brushes.  If you're not an icon artist, send me some
  83. mail, and perhaps I can make something for you.

  85. Regardless of whether you prefer MWB or NewIcon images (or neither!), it's
  86. important to remember that the NewIcons system works with any style of image,
  87. and gives you the benefit of not having to worry about what your palette is
  88. set to in preferences.  The images will auto-remap to the appropriate color.
  89. Personally, I prefer the NewIcons style, but you can use NewIcons to adapt
  90. your icons to any style you like.

  99. This set is freely distributable, and the individual icons may be used or
  100. modified as you please.  If you pass on the package to others, please keep the
  101. archive intact with its documentation.  The authors of the programs for which
  102. these icons were designed have my permission to add them to their program
  103. archives; please let me know if you do.  Email gives me incentive to keep this
  104. little (?!) series going, so let's hear from you.

  108. These icons were created with DeluxePaint IV AGA, NED (Newicons EDitor, Roger
  109. McVey's NewIcon editor - still in beta form) and NewIcon2brush. Final
  110. formatting was done with killoldicon by Michael Barsoom, and my batch NewIcon
  111. processing script, Brush2NewIcon (which I may upload to Aminet someday if I
  112. make it more user friendly).
